Abu Dhabi, UAE, September 21, 2015 –“The Touch” a film warning parents against neglecting children at home, emerged as the winner of The Smovies' Season 2 competition. The competition's theme was “The Message” and submissions needing to focus on a socially compelling issue. Out of the 12 short film shortlisted films, "The Touch" was submitted by directors Vimin Thomas and Sujith Inchora. In second place was "Save Water" by Vasilis Blioumis while "Control Your Anger" by Firas Salah came in third.
The winning entry, which will screen across VOX Cinemas in the previews section before the main feature, is intended to give exposure to the winner, with the aim of boosting their film making career. The prize includes an accelerated 5-day film making scholarship from the New York Film Academy.
The Second Place selection, “Save Water” by Blioumis, was filmed in the UAE and Greece, and promoted water conservation, while Third Place winner, “Control Your Anger,” by Salah is an insightful short on how anger is contagious.
The Smovie short film competition platform launched in April 2015, is run by BrandMoxie, with strategic partnership with VOX Cinemas. The competitions run in three seasons, with the third due to be launched next month.
An award ceremony was held at Nation Galleria that recognized all the winners, screened the top 12 films, and staged a session with the jury. The members of the jury for Season 2 are Emirati directors Nawaf Al Janahi, Khalid Al Mahmoud, and Nujoom Al Ghanem, filmmaking instructors and veterans David Moore, Dahlia Mahmoud, Greg Unrau, Mohannad al Bakri, Michelle Nickelson as well popular Emirati actor Mansoor Al Feeli.
The three month-long competition attracted a sizeable number of entries, out of which 12 were selected for the shortlist. Participants were film students, hobbyists, as well as some professional filmmakers. The short clips ran for a maximum of two minutes.
